ICAADA Certified Peer Recovery Coach (CPRC) is an experienced level certification for those who are in personal lived experience of recovery from substance use, mental health, or co-occurring disorders. This certification is for those who wish to provide recovery support to those seeking/in recovery from substance use and/or mental health concerns. This peer recovery support certification is recognized by the Indiana Division of Mental Health and Addiction and Indiana Department of Workforce Development as Promoted Industry Certifications. This certification is a billable option through Indiana Medicaid, Indiana Recovery Works and Indiana Problem Gambler Awareness Program. This certification meets the International Credentialing & Reciprocity Consortium requirements for the Peer Recovery (PR) certification.  Please visit IC&RC reciprocity page and learn more about reciprocity and how this certification may be eligible for other IC&RC Member Boards certifications.

CPRC Requirements

Pre-requisite:
  • Candidate must have a minimum of high school diploma or equivalent (HSE/GED)
  • Candidate must have personal, lived experience in their own recovery from addiction, mental illness, or co-occurring substance and mental disorders. *With a minimum recovery time of one year (self-attested yet verified through references is required)*
  • Candidate must live or work in Indiana at least 51% of the time
  • Candidate must be 18 years of age or older
Education and Training:
  • Minimum 35 hours of recovery support fundamentals specific education
    • MHAI SWD Training Institute 2-day Recovery Support Ethics is the only course accepted
  • 16 hours of recovery support ethical responsibility specific education
    • MHAI SWD Training Institute 2-day Recovery Support Ethics is the only course accepted
  • 6 hours of HIV/AIDS specific education
  • 8 hours of education in the CPRC skills domains: Advocacy, Ethical Responsibility, Mentoring and Education, Recovery/Wellness Support, and Harm Reduction.
CPRC Skills Domains:
  • Domain I: Advocacy
  • Domain II: Ethical Responsibility
  • Domain III: Mentoring and Education
  • Domain IV: Recovery/Wellness Support
  • Domain V: Harm Reduction

Register for your CPRC certification

Applications should NOT BE started until all pre-requisites and required training(s) are met/completed. If you start an application prior to completing this, it will be deleted. Please note you will have six (6) months from loading the application to complete. If it is not completed within six (6) months of starting, the application will be deleted, and you will need to reload it in and start from the beginning.

Professional Experience:
  • 500 hours of professional recovery support (volunteer or paid) and 25 hours of direct supervision specific to the CPRC Skills Domains.
    Please click here for examples of hours that will count as peer support experience.
  • Supervision for a Peer Recovery Coach may be performed by one of the certifications/licenses outlined below: 
  1. A licensed behavioral health professional currently practicing in the state of Indiana (LAC, LCAC, LBSW, LSW, LCSW, LMHC, LMFT, HSPP, or Psychiatrist)
  2. CADAC II or higher through ICAADA
  3. ICADC or ICAADC through IC&RC
  4. NCAC II or MAC through NAADAC
  5. CSPR-CL through ICAADA
  6. CSPR-PR through ICAADA
Code of Ethics:
  • The candidate must sign, and agree to abide by the ICAADA Certified Peer Recovery Coach (CPRC) Code of Ethics
Examination
Initial Application Fees:
  • Membership: $125
  • Exam: Member – $150 | Non-member – $300
  • Certification: Member – $100 | Non-member – $200
Recertification:
  • The ICAADA CPRC is renewable every two (2) years from the date of issuance. To renew candidates must obtain 40 hours of recovery support specific education every two (2) years, including 6 clock-hours in recovery support (or non-clinical) ethics.
Recertification Fees:
  • ICAADA Renewal Membership: $100
  • Certification Renewal Fee: Member – $100 | Non-member – $200
