Certified Family Recovery Coach (CFRC) is an experienced level credential for family members of someone who may or may not be seeking and/or in recovery from substance use, mental health, and/or co-occurring disorders who has actively supported navigation or navigated systems on the loved ones behalf  and do not themselves have personal lived experience of recovery from substance use, mental health, or co-occurring concerns, who wish to provide recovery support to family members or those seeking/in recovery from substance use and/or mental health concerns. This credential from ICAADA allows candidates the ability to have professional development, demonstrate professional experience, and additional education related to providing recovery support services.

CFRC Requirements

Pre-requisite:
  • Candidate must live in or work in Indiana 51% of the time
  • Candidate must have a minimum of high school diploma or equivalent (HSE/GED)
  • Candidate must be a family member of someone who may or may not be seeking and/or in recovery from substance use, mental health, and/or co-occurring disorders (persons in personal recovery are not eligible for this credential)
  • Candidate must be 18 years of age or older
Education and Training:
  • Minimum 35 hours of recovery support fundamentals specific education
    • MHAI SWD Training Institute 5-day Recovery Support Fundamentals training OR CCAR Recovery Coach Academy training completed prior to July 1st, 2024, are the only courses accepted
  • 16 hours of recovery support ethical responsibility specific education
    • MHAI SWD Training Institute 2-day Recovery Support Ethics is the only course accepted
  • 6 hours of HIV/AIDS specific education
  • 8 hours of education in the CPRC skills domains: Advocacy, Ethical Responsibility, Mentoring and Education, Recovery/Wellness Support, Harm Reduction.
CFRC Skills Domains:
  • Domain I: Advocacy
  • Domain II: Ethical Responsibility
  • Domain III: Mentoring and Education
  • Domain IV: Recovery/Wellness Support
  • Domain V: Harm Reduction

Applications should NOT BE started until all pre-requisites and required training(s) are met/completed. If you start an application prior to completing this, it will be deleted. Please note you will have six (6) months from loading the application to complete. If it is not completed within six (6) months of starting, the application will be deleted, and you will need to reload it in and start from the beginning.

Professional Experience:
  • 500 hours of professional recovery support (volunteer or paid) and 25 hours of direct supervision specific to the CFRC Skills Domains. Please click here for examples of hours that will count as peer support experience.
  • Supervision for a Recovery Coach may be performed by one of the certifications/licenses outlined below: 
  1. A licensed behavioral health professional currently practicing in the state of Indiana (LAC, LCAC, LBSW, LSW, LCSW, LMHC, LMFT, HSPP, or Psychiatrist) 
  2. CADAC II or higher through ICAADA 
  3. ICADC or ICAADC through IC&RC 
  4. NCAC II or MAC through NAADAC 
  5. CSPR-CL through ICAADA 
  6. CSPR-PR through ICAADA
Code of Ethics:
  • The candidate must sign, and agree to abide by the ICAADA Certified Family Recovery Coach (CFRC) Code of Ethics
Examination
Initial Application Fees:
  • Membership: $125
  • Exam: Member – $150 | Non-member – $300
  • Certification: Member – $100 | Non-member – $200
Recertification:
  • The ICAADA CFRC is renewable every two (2) years from the date of issuance. To renew candidates must obtain 40 hours of recovery support specific education during the period of certification validity (every two (2) years), including 6 clock-hours in recovery support (or non-clinical) ethics.
Recertification Fees:
  • ICAADA Renewal Membership: $100
  • Certification Renewal Fee: Member – $100 | Non-member – $200
