CADAC I

Certified Alcohol and Drug Addiction Consultant I (CADAC I) credential is an entry-level substance use treatment credential to support a professionals growth towards a CADAC II or higher credential. This credential is only recognized in Indiana.

CADAC I Requirements

CADAC Skills Domains:
  • Domain I: Scientific Principles of Substance Use and Co-occurring Disorders
  • Domain II: Evidence-based Screening and Assessment
  • Domain III: Evidence-based Treatment, Counseling, and Referral
  • Domain IV: Professional, Ethical, and Legal Responsibilities
Experience:
  • If a candidate holds a high school diploma/equivalent or an applicable associate degree
    • 2,000 hours of supervised experience using the CADAC skills domains in a substance use treatment setting
  • If a candidate holds an applicable bachelor’s or master’s degree
    • 1,000 hours of supervised experience using the CADAC skills domains in a substance use treatment setting

Supervision:

The supervision of the CADAC skills domain experience may take place within an academic setting and/or within a supervised work setting.

  • All candidates, regardless of educational background, must complete minimum 220 hours of direct supervision related to the CADAC skills domain experience hours required for the credential. These supervision hours are in addition to the experience hours.

Supervision must be provided by a designated supervisor who holds one of the following credentials/licensures:

  • A licensed behavioral health professional currently practicing in the state of Indiana (LAC, LCAC, LBSW, LSW, LCSW, LMFT, HSPP or Psychiatrist)
  • CADAC II or higher CADAC credential through ICAADA
  • ICADC or ICAADC through IC&RC
  • NCAC II or MAC through NAADAC
Education and Training:
  • 180 clock hours of formal education specific to the CADAC skills domains
    • Of the 180 total hours required:
      • 6 hours in addiction counseling ethics
      • 6 hours of HIV/AID education
      • 6 hours in cultural competency education

Education and training hours are defined as workshops, seminars, institutes, accredited college/university courses, and other accredited education delivered in-person or on-line. Education hours must be accredited by approved providers who are state or national organizations granted authority to accredit education for credentialing and licensing purposes. You must show a certificate of attendance/completion that lists who has accredited the course for education hours when submitting the hours for approval. One (1) contact hour of education is equal to sixty (60) minutes of continuous instruction. 15 contact hours are given for each college semester credit. Therefore, a college course of three (3) credits is equal to 45 contact hours.

Supporting documentation in the form of syllabus, course description, etc. may also be required to review content for acceptability. To be considered a valid training experience for the purpose of credentialing, education/training must be related to the knowledge and skill base associated with the performance domains outlined for this credential.

Examination:
  • Candidates must pass the IC&RC ADC exam
  • The ADC exam is available in English and Spanish. Please note when scheduling your exam if you wish to take the Spanish version.
  • Remote and in-person examinations are available. When considering remote examinations, please ensure you have reviewed system requirements and other obligations that must be adhered to for success remote examination completion. Code of Ethics:
  • The applicant must sign, and agree to abide by the Certified Alcohol and Drug Addiction Consultant (CADAC) Code of Ethics
Residency:
  • Candidate must live or work in Indiana at least 51% of the time
Recertification:
  • 40 clock-hours of CADAC domain specific education and/or training during the period of certification. Including 6 clock-hours in Addiction Counseling Ethics education and 6 clock-hours in Cultural Competency education.
