ICAADA Medication Assisted Treatment Specialist (MATS) is a clinical credential recognized by the Division of Mental Health and Addiction of the Indiana Department of Family and Social Services Administration.

Requirements to earn your CPS credential

  • Professional experience
    • No clinical work experience required
  • Certifications/licenses
    • Although the MATS credential is intended for certified or licensed behavioral health professionals, no certification or license is required
  • Education
    • Bachelor’s degree in health/human services recommended
    • 47 hours of ICAADA approved education or training in medication assisted treatment which includes the entire range of the four MATS performance domains: pharmacotherapy, recovery supports, education and professional responsibility
  • Examination
    • Applicants must pass the ICAADA/CCB MATS exam
  • Code of ethics
    • Applicants must sign the ICAADA peer recovery code of ethics statement affirming that the applicant has read and will abide by the code of ethics
  • Recertification
    • 12 hours of medication assisted treatment continuing education earned every two years
  • Geographic location
    • You must live or work at least 51-percent of the time in Indiana

Applicants for the MATS credential must demonstrate applicable education or employment as well as pass the ICAADA MATS examination.

Once the ICAADA/CCB MATS exam is passed and your submitted application packet is complete, your MATS certificate will be issued within 60 days.
