Requirements to earn your CADAC I credential

  • Professional experience
    • 2,000 hours of supervised addiction treatment employment
    • Up to 1,000 hours of the experience requirement may be waived if the applicant has a baccalaureate degree or higher in human services from an accredited college or university or a minimum of three years of experience in a recovery support program (AA, NA, AL-ANON, Celebrate Recovery, etc.)
  • Education
    • At least six hours of specialized training in HIV
    • At least six hours of counseling ethics training
    • 180 clock hours of formal training in addictions
    • 220 clock hours of an approved, supervised practicum in the eight addiction counseling practice dimensions
  • Examination
  • Code of ethics
    • Applicants must sign the ICAADA peer recovery code of ethics statement affirming that the applicant has read and will abide by the code of ethics
  • Recertification
    • 40 hours of related continuing education earned every two years, including six hours of counseling ethics and six hours of HIV training
  • Geographic location
    • None

Applications for the CADAC I credential must demonstrate applicable education or employment as well as pass the IC&RC counselor examination.
